Electronic notarizations were first enacted before mobile phones and web cams were popular. By legal definition, electronic notarization means the entire notarial act is completed electronically with the participants all physically present.

Physical presence means that the notary can make direct eye to eye contact, and the notary is able to physically touch each and every participant or signer. If all participants are not physically present, then the notarial act is not legal if the state does not allow it's commissioned notaries to perform remote notarizations.

Remote notarizations means the commissioned notary can perform the entire notarial act using a web cam with audio and video with the participants physically in different places.

Now hopefully you know the difference between e-notarizations and remote notarizations because they are not the same when it comes to regulations, laws, and the states.
